At the moment, Vito does not support direct messages (DMs) or private messaging.
To mention a participant in a Vito hub who has set their profile to public, you can use @ + their username to tag them in a message. They'll then get a notification that you've mentioned them in your post.
You can also reply to messages, but these replies will be visible to all members of the hub.
